The Port Authority is accepting applications for a Police Officer exam tentatively scheduled for November. The deadline to apply is Oct. 16.
Thousands are expected to apply for the exam, as it offers a route to a law-enforcement career at a salary more generous than that of most other local police departments, including the NYPD.
Top Pay $70G
The starting salary for Port Authority Police Officers is $32,361. The top salary, reached after five years of service, is $70,344.
City cops, under a recent contract arbitration award, receive $34,154 to start but reach a top pay of only $54,048 after five years.
Applicants for the Port Authority test must be at least 21 years old by Nov. 11 and must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED). All candidates must be able to be hired before their 35th birthday, and must have 60 college credits or two years of military service by the time they are appointed.
There is a $40 fee to apply for the exam. Applications are available at several Port Authority offices in New York and New Jersey, including at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan.
The Port Authority has established two information lines to answer questions about the test, 1-866-727-6542 and 1-212-435-2926. In addition, an information booklet about the test may be downloaded at www.panynj.gov.
