Police Officer
Killed During Chase on Staten Island
A police officer was killed Monday
after his car crashed during a chase on Staten Island.
Police say 31-year-old John Kelly was chasing a man on a motorcycle
that was believed to have been stolen. Kelly lost control of his
car, hitting a utility pole at Forest Avenue and Gulf Avenue around
1:30 Monday afternoon.
Kelly was taken to Saint Vincent's Hospital, where he later died.
Police say Kelly was a member of the Auto Larceny Unit on Staten
Island. He comes from a large family of police officers, and his
wife is also an officer.
Friends and family, as well as Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, came to
the hospital when they heard of the accident.
It's not clear if the man Kelly was chasing was ever apprehended. |
