Police Not At Full Force

By Stephanie Gaskell

January 11, 2007 -- The NYPD swore in 1,103 recruits yesterday, less than half the amount it was authorized to hire, and the police union said it's because the city doesn't pay enough.

Starting salaries for police recruits was slashed in 2005 to just $25,100.

"The NYPD will be able to recruit as many candidates as it needs when top pay for its police officers becomes competitive with other law-enforcement agencies in the metropolitan area," said Patrolmen's Benevolent Association president Patrick Lynch.

NYPD officials agreed they aren't at their authorized head count, which is 37,838 officers.

Currently there are 35,643 officers on duty.
