Re: Childcare Buy Back

In 2000, the New York State Legislature passed a statute allowing police officers to buy back up to a year of service time for each period of childcare leave taken. As you know, the Department originally took the position that former Transit and Housing police officers who were merged into the NYPD in 1995 were ineligible to take advantage of this benefit.

In June 2001, the PBA filed suit, challenging the Department's right to exclude former Transit and Housing officers. As a result of the PBA's lawsuit, the City and Department have now agreed to make the benefit available to former Transit and Housing police officers. This is a reminder that all officers must take advantage of this benefit by July 31, 2002.

If you have any questions, please call Joe Maccone or the General Counsel's Office at the PBA.

Fraternally,

Patrick J. Lynch
