The PBA has put up a full-color billboard, 20 feet
high and 60 feet wide, alongside the Major Deegan Expressway in
the Bronx at 149th St., just south of Yankee Stadium. Under the
title “Support our Troops at Home and Abroad,” it shows
a New York City police officer on one side, defending New Yorkers
against crime and terrorism, and a U.S. serviceman on the other
side, fighting in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Similar billboards will be going up early this week
on the Long Island Expressway, the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and
other highways, as well as posters on some 100 telephone booths
in upper Manhattan and the four outer boroughs.
We have launched this outdoor display advertising campaign to express
our solidarity with the U.S. servicemen and women serving in Iraq
– and in Afghanistan, where they are still risking and losing
their lives – and to remind people of the similarities between
New York City police officers and their counterparts in the military.
Both groups have sacrificed much to keep ordinary citizens safe
from crime, war and terror. And both groups are dedicated to protecting
and preserving basic freedoms – the military in the far corners
of the globe and New York City police officers right here at home.
Although most of the major battles in Iraq appear over, the war
in Iraq is not yet over and the war to prevent domestic terrorism
continues. While the U.S. military is being asked to act more like
police officers, collaring bank robbers and otherwise keeping the
peace in Baghdad and other Iraqi locales, we police officers have
to think and act more like the military as we continue to fight
the war against terrorism. The bond between wearers of the uniform
– both military and police – has never been stronger.
This is why we launched this outdoor display advertising campaign.
