At the recent City Hall wake of Councilman James Davis, a police
officer from DCPI at the request of the Mayor’s office politely asked Councilman
Charles Barron to move off the steps where he was conducting an interview with
a
reporter. To maintain the dignity of the wake, the Mayor’s office had designated
an area for the press to conduct all interviews.
In response to the police officer’s request, Barron unleashed a verbal
assault on the officer using foul language in an abusive and dismissive manner.
When a member of the Mayor’s press office made the same request, she too
was met with abusive and vulgar language from Barron.
As we all know, a police officer’s job is difficult and challenging.
We often have to take the abuse of protestors or criminals during the performance
of our lawful duties. Our members certainly don’t need to be subjected to
that kind of abuse from elected officials who should know better and who should
show proper respect to police officers in the performance of their duties.
On behalf of all of our members and the offended police officer, I have written
to Council Speaker Gifford Miller to request a formal reprimand of Councilman
Barron
for his vulgar and disrespectful actions.
Fraternally,
Patrick J. Lynch
President
