THE MAYOR PROTESTS TOO MUCH ABOUT THE SOURCE OF THE DISGRACEFUL NYPD SALARIESThe mayor is at it again, spinning that the PBA is the source of the disgraceful starting pay. But NYC police officers know better. NYC police officers have endured this poverty-level pay system, both at the starting level and at top pay, for over 15 years. Its sole cause is the City’s refusal to bargain in good faith and the inept City labor practices in the area of police pay. The City has allowed NYPD pay issues to reach crisis proportions, where some members need food stamps and the rest hover around the poverty line. However, lest there be any doubt about the source of the low starting pay, we link to the following documents —
— detailing the City’s various proposals in the last round of negotiations and arbitration. There is no proposal from the PBA that seeks a lower starting salary. As is evident from these documents, the arbitrator had to save the City from itself, when he refused to lower the pay to $23, 000, the amount sought by the City in some proposals. The City is solely responsible for the disgraceful pay in the NYPD.
