Pension Roulette Is Ended

We are pleased to announce that Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed the 20 year pension guarantee bill into law.  This long sought after guarantee ensures that any MOS who completes 20 years of service will get their pension even if dismissed by the NYPD.  The law protects the pension except in cases where an officer is convicted of a felony crime.  This new law ensures that simply being discharged by the NYPD no longer means pension forfeiture.  This protection went into effect immediately upon signing by the Governor.

We are deeply grateful to all of the state senators and assembly members who supported this bill and to City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and to Speaker of the Assembly Sheldon Silver for their critical role in making this law for the fair treatment of police officers a reality.  We also salute Governor Andrew Cuomo for having the courage to sign this bill in the face of strong editorial opposition.

The PBA has sought this pension guarantee for over 30 years, and now we have it.  Pension roulette is finally a thing of the past.

Fraternally,

Patrick J. Lynch
President
