The New York City Police Department is an Equal

the Department possibly involving discrimination.

WHEN TO FILE A COMPLAINT
Federal, State and/or local laws prohibit employment discrimination
based on:
- Age
- National origin
- Alienage or citizenship status
- Prior record of arrest or conviction
- Color
- Race
- Creed
- Religion
- Disability
- Sexual harassment
- Gender
- Sexual orientation
- Marital status
- Status as a victim of domestic violence
- Military status
In addition to those who fall within one of
the above protected groups, those who are "perceived" to be within
one of the categories or who have a "known relationship or association"
with someone who is, or is perceived to be, within one of the categories,
are also protected. All forms of discrimination are prohibited both
in actual workplace and in any location that can be reasonably regarded
as an extension of the workplace, such as an off-site Department
sanctioned social function.
Federal, State and/or local laws prohibit discrimination,
which affects:
- Hiring
- Training
- Assignments
- Transfer
- Working condition
- Discipline
- Salary and benefits
- Termination
- Evaluations
- Any other terms and conditions of
employment
- Promotions
The law requires that reasonable accommodation
be made for qualified employees and applicants with disabilities.
The law also requires that reasonable accommodation be made for
their religious observances.
WHERE TO FILE AN EEO COMPLAINT
If any employees or applicant feels that a manager, supervisor or
another employee has discriminated against him or her, this individual
should contact the EEO Officer, a supervisor, or an EEO Liaison.
The Equal Employment Opportunity officer is Deputy Commissioner
Neldra M. Zeigler, who may be contacted at (646) 610-5330; the office
is located at One Police Plaza, Room 1204. A list of the Equal Employment
Opportunity Liaisons and where they may be contacted is provided
in the EEO Policy Book. The EEO Officer has the authority to recommend
to the Police Commissioner that disciplinary action be taken against
any employee who has committed an unlawful discriminatory act.
All complaints will be handled in confidence.
No employee may retaliate against or harass any person for filing
a complaint or cooperating in the investigation of a complaint.
Such retaliation or harassment is unlawful and is cause for disciplinary
action.

OTHER PLACES WHERE A COMPLAINT OF DISCRIMINATION
MAY BE MADE
Any employee or applicant for employment who
believes that he or she has experienced discrimination has a right
to file a formal complaint with the federal, state, or local agencies
listed below. A person does not give up this right when he or she
files a complaint with the Department's EEO Office. The following
federal, state, and local agencies enforce laws against discrimination:
