Rodney graduated from the NYPD Academy in 1988 and was assigned to the 71st Precinct in Brooklyn. He later served as a Patrol Officer in the 79th Precinct and the Emergency Service Squad 8. He was promoted and assigned to the 77th Precinct as the FTU Supervisor, and later returned to NYPD Emergency Service as a Sergeant initially in Squad 4, the Bronx, and finally, served in Squad 8 in Brooklyn. As a patrol supervisor in the 77th Precinct, enjoying the challenge of patrol, the Emergency Service Unit requested Sergeant Rodney Gillis be reassigned to the Emergency Service Squad 8 -- midnight tour -- where he served as supervisor until his death on September 11, 2001.

Sergeant Gillis is survived by his three children, his mother Geraldine and his brother Ronald.
