P.O. James D. McNaughton

James D. McNaughton

Killed by a sniper's bullet, James D. McNaughton, a 27-year-old staff sergeant serving in a military police battalion, was the first Police Officer to give his life for his country as a soldier in the war in Iraq.

He has been described as a quiet man with a wonderful sense of humor who devoted his life to public service. "His love of the military was definitely fueled by his love of the American way of life, and by 9/11," said Officer Brian Kenny, the union delegate for Transit District 2.

Police Officer McNaughton entered the police academy on July 2, 2001, and was assigned to a transit bureau in Lower Manhattan. He reported for duty in the Army on October 4, 2002.

James McNaughton was from a police family — his fiancée, Lilliana Paredes, and his stepmother, Michele, are cops, and his father, William, retired from the Police Department in 2005. He is also survived by his mother, Cho, and younger brother, Ryan, who reside in Holbrook, Long Island.

His death was covered in the following media:

Newsday, Daily News, New York Times, New York Sun, New York Post, New York 1, WABC , WNBC, WCBS.
