Det. Joseph Vigiano

Fallen at the World Trade Center
September 11, 2001

Detective Joseph V. Vigiano, 34, was appointed to the NYPD on April 28, 1987, and began his career on patrol in Field Training Unit 16, prior to being assigned to ESU 7, as well as the 73 and 75 Precincts. One of the Department's most decorated members, he had been shot three separate times in the line of duty and often lectured other law enforcement agencies on his own time about police tactics.

A volunteer firefighter, he held the position of fire commissioner in his hometown for several years. Recently promoted to second grade-detective. He was scheduled to become a Cub Scout troop leader for his son's unit on the night of his death.

Detective Vigiano is survived by his wife Kathleen, a police officer assigned to the 75th Precinct; children Joseph, James and John; and parents Jane and John. His brother John, a New York City firefighter assigned to Ladder Co. 132, was also killed in the World Trade Center incident.
