PBA HotlineDecember 6, 2002

This is PBA Recording Secretary Bob Zink.

Thank you for calling the PBA Hotline.

Police Officer David Gonzalez was shot by a low-level crack dealer as the officer was arresting the criminal back in 1999.

Later, Supreme Court Justice Laura Blackburne released the would-be cop-killer and dismissed the charges on a technicality.

After expressions of outrage from PBA President Pat Lynch and other law-abiding citizens, Judge Blackburne heard prosecution arguments about why the shooter should be locked up and tried, and then reserved decision.

Incredibly, on Friday, December 6th -- at a hearing attended by Pat Lynch, PBA board members and dozens of cops -- Judge Blackburne committed a grave miscarriage of justice by ruling once again in favor of the cop-shooter.

After the ruling, at a press conference covered by every news organization in town, Pat Lynch strongly criticized the ruling and called for Judge Blackburne's removal from the bench. Lynch's press conference was carried on every TV and radio news station in the city and reported in all the daily newspapers the next day.
