PBA HotlineMay 6, 2003

Hi, this is Bob Zink, Recording Secretary for the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association. Thanks for calling the PBA Hotline.

PBA President Pat Lynch and Project Childsafe recently announced the donation of 33,000 cable style gunlocks to the members of the NYPD.

At a news conference Lynch said: “This simple locking device is very effective in protecting our families, particularly children, against the possibility of discharge. We are very grateful to Project Childsafe for this very generous donation.”

The locks will work with a .38 caliber or a 9 millimeter weapon. To secure a 9 millimeter, you must remove the magazine and pull the slide back so that a steel-wound, reinforced cable can pass through the ejector and out the magazine handle. The cable is then inserted into a lock.

To secure a 38, open the cylinder, remove the ammunition and put the cable through the frame and lock it.

Each lock is supplied with two keys.

The PBA is currently working on a method of distribution. These locks will be available to you shortly at no cost.

This is Bob Zink. Thanks for calling the PBA Hotline.
