PBA HotlineJanuary 26, 2004

This is PBA President, Pat Lynch. Thanks for calling the PBA Hotline.

We are all outraged and appalled at Commissioner Kelly’s rush to judgment in the shooting that occurred at the Armstrong Houses on January 24.

Since the Commissioner proclaimed – before the facts were in – that the shooting was unjustified, the PBA has been waging a major campaign to get a fair hearing for our brother police officer.

We do a dangerous job every day, and this city owes us the benefit of a doubt when something like this tragic shooting occurs.

The PBA has taken our case directly to the officials involved. I have met with Brooklyn District Attorney Hynes and with Police Commissioner Kelly to raise our objections and to insist on a fair and impartial hearing of the facts.

And we have taken our case to the public through the media in order to speak directly to the citizens of New York and to underscore the Police Commissioner’s mistake in branding this action as unjustified before the investigation was concluded.

The department has convened a panel to discuss tactics and policy in the wake of this shooting. It is our view that whatever this panel suggests, it cannot take away a Police Officer’s discretion to unholster when faced with a dangerous situation.

Your PBA will keep you informed regarding the important issues that arise from this case.

This is Pat Lynch. Thanks for calling the PBA Hotline.
