PBA HotlineJanuary 24, 2005

Hello. This is Pat Lynch, President of the New York City Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association.

PERB

The formal hearings before the PERB panel have been completed. The last of the 14 hearing dates occurred on January 12. Written closing briefs are due to the panel by close of business on February 18 with response briefs due by close of business on March 4.

The PBA has stressed the urgent need for a quick decision given the length of time PBA members have worked without a contract.

I am confident that we have put forth a strong and compelling case. We did our homework and preparation, and we made our points clearly and decisively. Our team is presently writing our closing brief. We also look forward to having the opportunity to supply a written rebuttal to the city’s closing document. Then it’s in the hands of the panel to decide the terms of our contract.

Cop-killer parole

Police Officer Robert Sorrentino of the 101 precinct was shot on April 10, 1980 and died 10 days later. Four men were arrested, convicted and sentenced to 25 years to life. Three of the four died in prison, including the shooter, and the fourth, Russell Carroll, goes before the parole board next month.

On January 19 I joined members of the Sorrentino family and his former partner, Jack Dowd, as they gave their victim’s impact statement to the state parole board. I encourage everyone, police officers and others, to log onto the website www.gopetition.com and to indicate your opposition to the parole of this convicted cop killer. The more voices calling for the continued incarceration of Russell Carroll the better. And we thank you for this effort.

We also send our condolences to our members in the UFA who have lost three of their own. Our prayers are with their families.

Thanks for calling the PBA hotline.
