PBA HotlineJanuary 3, 2006

Hello. This is Joseph Alejandro, treasurer of the New York City Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association.

The World Trade Center Disability Law was passed in Albany to protect emergency service workers who were assigned to the rescue, recovery and cleanup of the attack on the World Trade Center. This law presumes that certain illnesses that may arrise in the future were caused by exposure from the attacks of 9-11.

Any member who worked 40 hours or more at the World Trade Center site, the Fresh Kills landfill, the NYC or temporary morgues, or on the barges traveling between the West Side of Manhattan and the Fresh Kills landfill should file a notice of participation with the pension fund even if you are not sick. Doing so will protect your option to claim a World Trade Center related line of duty injury and permit you to obtain accident disability benefits should you become ill in the future.

If you do not file your notice of participation by June 14, 2007, you will not be eligible for those benefits. Forms and more information can be obtained by visiting the pba website at www.nycpba.org .

On behalf of our president, Pat Lynch, and the executive board of the PBA, let me take this opportunity to wish you and yours a very happy, healthy and safe new year.

This is Joe Alejandro. Thank you for calling the PBA Hotline.
