Legislative Update
As a result of a great deal of professional and personal lobbying
in Albany by the PBA during the past legislative session, we have
gotten a total of nine bills approved by both houses. This is a
very important step in the process because a bill cannot possibly
become law without the approval of both houses. Those nine bills
will now go to the governor for consideration. He may sign them
into law or veto them.
The bills seek, among other things;
- To make discipline negotiable as a condition of employment;
- To expand the presumption of line of duty illnesses; to give
mos the option of taking a pay out in lieu of terminal leave;
- To require an independent hearing officer in disciplinary cases
where a member may be subject to dismissal
- And to give PERB more power.
See the complete
listing of our legislative agenda in Albany.
It is important to understand that achieving passage in both houses
does not ensure that a bill will become law. Citing cost concerns,
the mayor has already gone on the record as being opposed to several
of these bills and has asked the governor to veto them. The PBA
will continue to lobby the governor for passage of these bills that
will benefit all of our members.
