October - December
Dec. 12 Pat Lynch is quoted in an article in The Chief-Leader reporting Gov. Pataki's veto of bills that would have allowed cops and firefighters to amend their terminal leave benefit to include a monetary payment instead of days off. "Obviously, we are disappointed in the veto." The Chief-Leader also runs a long story, with photos, about the PBA's Finest of the Finest awards ceremony, quoting Lynch: "If not for New York City police officers,no one in this country could hold a protest sign and no one in this country could say and stand up for what they believe in." The Daily News quotes Lynch in an article about cop-killer Joanne Chesimard having gotten a center named after her City College: "It's disgusting that an institution of higher learning whose main goal is to educate people would dedicate a room to a person whose main goal in life was to take lives, especially those of people who wear the uniform." Pat Lynch slams CUNY for center named in honor of a cop killer in videos on Fox5, New York 1, WABC, WB11, RNN, and WCBS.
Dec 9 Many TV channels cover the PBA Widows' and Children's Holiday Party.
Dec. 8 Pat Lynch is quoted in an amNewYork article finding that police shootings have not risen this year: “Despite the raw emotion and scrutiny that [the Sean Bell shooting] has generated, New York City police officers are among the most restrained in the use of deadly physical force in the nation. That has been true for years and remains true today and is only supported by the fact that the five officers involved never fired their weapons on the job before.”
Dec. 7 Pat Lynch is quoted in an article in the Chief-Leader about Mayor Bloomberg’s assertion that the police action in the strip club incident was “excessive.” “PBA head Pat Lynch contended that the mayor’s making such statements when the facts of the case had yet to be established,” the Chief-Leader writes, “could ‘only serve to inflame tensions and prejudice the rights of those who are presumptively innocent.’” Lynch is also quoted in a Daily News article about Gov. Pataki’s veto of two bills that would have allowed police officers and firefighters to receive a lump sum in cash instead of taking their terminal leave benefit when retiring: “This is a benefit that was bought and paid for during previous negotiations.”
Dec. 6 Pat Lynch is quoted in a Daily News article in which a lawyer representing two of the men shot in the Queens strip club incident suggests that the PBA president is involved in a police attempt to “dirty up the victims.” “Patently untrue,” Lynch is quoted as responding. “All we’ve consistently asked for is a thorough and fair investigation of the case.”
Dec. 5 Pat Lynch is quoted in the Daily News, Newsday and New York Sun (and his photo appears in Newsday) in the newspapers’ follow-up articles on the 50 police bullets fired in the Queens strip club incident: “Fiction on the street shouldn’t become fact in the courtroom. What we want here is for the grand jury to review the facts in the case, not the facts that are running in the street.”
Dec. 4 More news coverage of the PBA response to the shooting on TV news channels WNBC, WABC, UPN9, WCBS, WNBC and WB11 and in Newsday, the Daily News, and the New York Sun
November
Nov. 30 More videos concerning the shooting in Queens on WNBC, WB11 and WCBS.
Nov. 28 Pat Lynch and Mike Palladino appear on NY 1's "Inside City Hall" program and criticize Mayor Bloomberg's pronouncement of "excessive force" in the weekend's shooting in Queens. Lynch is interviewed on New York 1 following a day of testimony in the trial of the killer of Detectives Andrews and Nemorin. Lynch is quoted in the Daily News, New York Post and Chief- Leader¹s accounts of Mayor Bloomberg¹s statement that the 50 shots fired by police officers in the Queens strip club incident represented "excessive force": "Only the detectives and police officer who fired their weapons can explain the circumstances under which they took action, and they have not yet been heard. Premature statements made without the benefit of all the facts only serve to inflame tensions and prejudice the rights of those who are presumptively innocent." The Chief-Leader also reports Lynch¹s appointment to Governor-elect Spitzer¹s transition team. The Chief-Leader also notes Lynch¹s presence at the 78th Pct.¹s plaque dedication in honor of Det. Joseph A. Miccio, killed in the line of duty in 1942.
Nov. 27 Lynch slams Bloomberg's opinion of excessive force by police during weekend shooting in an NBC video.
Nov. 22 Pat Lynch is quoted in a New York Post article about him criticizing the lawyer for actor-turned-accused-cop-killer Lillo Brancato for stalling on going to trial in the murder of Officer Daniel Enchautegui: "He¹s talking out of both sides of his mouth. This is not a celebrity. It¹s a cold-blooded killer."
October
Oct. 31 Pat Lynch¹s photo and quotes appear in an article in The Chief-Leader about the contract dispute between the PBA and the city: "The real issue is that people thinking about becoming police officers look at the potential for earnings over the long run, and without competitive salaries at all levels starting and critical top pay none one is going to take this dangerous and difficult job."
Oct. 22 Pat Lynch is quoted in a Daily News article about two brothers who have "raked in more than $200,000" suing the NYPD: "What they do is not much better than sticking up the city¹s coffers at gunpoint."
Oct. 21 Pat Lynch is quoted in a Daily News report that the contract dispute between the PBA and the city is headed for binding arbitration. Lynch called the city¹s offer "lower than inflation" and "completely unacceptable to New York City police officers who are earning tens of thousands of dollars less each year than other local police departments."
Oct. 20 Pat Lynch is quoted in the Daily News and New York Post, in articles about the Bloomberg administration¹s attempt to cut death benefits to families of retired police officers and firefighters who die from WTC-related illnesses: "There should be no difference in the benefits provided to the family of a police officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty or who becomes ill and dies from toxic exposure during the rescue, recovery or cleanup from the attack on the World Trade Center."
Oct. 19 On WNBC TV, Lynch slams city for attempting to reduce 9/11 Death Benefit for retirees (video)
Oct. 11 Pat Lynch is quoted in a New York Post article about a defense attorney¹s claim that New York City police officer Eric Hernandez, who was killed after being beaten at a Bronx White Castle, was legally drunk at the time: "That does not give them the right to set upon this citizen."
