There they were — seventy thousand strong, crowded into six long blocks of lower Broadway, an undulating and vocal multitude of blue, white and yellow t-shirts, stretching all the way from Federal Plaza down to the southern tip of City Hall Park. Thousands of police officers, thousands of teachers and thousands of firefighters had come together in a common cause — to get paid according to the work they do instead of according to the unfair and outmoded labor relations practices of the city they work for.
