
he 1940's began and ended with NYPD radio cars painted green-and-white
with “POLICE” lights on top, but in between it was another story.
By 1942 the roof lights started to disappear, possibly because cars ordered
during World War II served as “blackout” vehicles, or perhaps because materials
to equip department cars were in short supply, or simply because new vehicles
needed to be sent out on patrol as soon as possible, minus extra paint work and
equipment. But by the end of the decade the "white tops" and “POLICE” lights
