NYC PBA OPPOSES PAROLE FOR COP KILLER
PBA President Patrick J. Lynch laid a wreath at a memorial for slain police
officer George Werdann at the 47th Precinct while calling for the continued incarceration
of the officer’s killer who is seeking parole.
“New York City’s police officers are never off-duty as was demonstrated
by the heroic acts of police officer George Werdann on February 21, 1982. The
young, 23 year-old police officer was on his way home from the 47 Precinct when
he spotted a supermarket robbery in progress and pursued the armed gunmen in his
private automobile. One of the two robbers, Jose Curet, waited crouched behind
a car and ambushed and killed officer Werdann in cold blood. Eleven days later,
Jose Curet and his brother were arrested in Puerto Rico where they fled after
the murder. On January 28th, Jose Curet will be considered for parole and we are
here to say that it must be denied. New York State must send a message, loud and
strong, that cop killers will never be permitted to walk the streets as free men.”
