PBA REACTS TO EVER-GROWING CITY BUDGET SURPLUS

PBA president Patrick J. Lynch said:

“The economic boom and the resulting surplus that New York City is enjoying is a dividend being paid by our safe streets.  The NYPD is facing a serious staffing shortage due to uncompetitive police pay.  Insufficient numbers of new recruits and huge numbers of resignations because of low pay means we don’t have enough police to ensure the continued safety of our streets.  It is a problem that would have to be addressed regardless of the budget picture.  There is no better time to adjust our police salary to market rate than now.  Ignoring the problem will condemn New York City to a decline in safety and the accompanying negative impact on our economy.”
