I was at wtc site from 9/11/01 to February 2002.In June of 2005 I was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 41 (prostate); July of 2006 had radical prostectomy done; since then have had at least ten additional surgeries to correct the urniary tract and bladder problems; along with constant heartburn; ptsd; sleep apnea; and still have incontenance; which I'm looking at another surgery the end of this year to put in an artificial sphincter in place; and recently diagnosed with restrictive lung disease; So please have yourself checked; if not for you; do it for your family!!!

I responded to Ground Zero on 9/11/2001 and worked there for numerous days and weeks following. Up until 05/2005 I was healthy and was the sort of person who could not sit still; always on the go working or fixing something around the house. I began feeling ill in May 2005 and nothing has been the same since. I am always tired and "feel ill" most of the time. I have constant pain in my left side and at times in other areas of my abdomen. At times I have sore spots on both sides of my rib cage but predominately on the left. I often feel lightheaded and numb. It's now a chore just getting through each day. I produce kidney stones like a rock quarry but I do not believe this is my problem, but rather a sympton of the underlying problem. I have been through many exams but no definitive answers as of yet. The only definitive answer I have is that mu urine calcium is off the charts and my vitamin D levels are raised. If anyone out there is suffering from something similar please contact me.

Does any one else have a severly dry skin condition that appears to be getting worse on their hand(s)? In the winter my fingers split open, it's very painful - no cream or lotion seems to really help. It started in in the winter of 2002.

I was at WTC & SI Landfill for about 73 days which adds up to around 890 hrs. I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last year, had all my thyroid removed, treated with radiation and currently taking thyroid replacement meds. I go back to the hospital at the end of August for a scan. Hopefully, this cancer won't come back.
In the meantime, doctors discovered I'm in the early stages of a 2nd cancer, a blood cancer called myeloma. Found this one by sheer luck. I'm now waiting to begin clinical trials at a cancer hosptial in the city.
Two cancers within a year. What's next?

Thank God that the NYCPBA is taking the lead in fighting for our rights an a New York City Police Officer regardless of rank. I was assigned to Ground Zero for 2 months and retired November, 2001. (Terminal Leave, Class of "82"). I served proudly in the NYPD. Last year when I was 46 I was diagnosed with Squarmous Cell Carsin. I had throat cancer. I was a non-smoker all my life and were not exposed to toxins with the exception of Ground Zero. I was ALWAYS healthy and very active. For now I am in remission. I was treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the doctors saved my life. Now I have perminant damage from the cancer but i am alive. I do hope that the government "does the right thing" and offers protection and compensation for the life long medications and lost wages we all experienced. Thank you again Pat and all the staff for speaking up for OUR rights.

Thanks to the PBA for creating this site. For awhile, I thought we would be forgotten or pushed to the side.
I am a little surprised and ashamed that this Adminstration is fighting this tooth and nail. Seems like they are waiting for a lot more deaths before they will even consider a possible link of WTC and recent illnesses. The City will go before Congress to fight Homeland funding but will ignore us.

Two more people are added to the Registry that have thyroid cancer. Sad to say this, but I'm glad I'm not alone. For more than a year, the medical community said it's unlikely WTC had anything to do with my thyroid cancer. What do they have to say now? I've heard there's more MOS out there with it too.

Can anyone recommend a medical expert to deal with all of the illnesses I am suuffering from 9/11. No doctor seems to know or care about my condition.
Posted by: John | July 28, 2006 01:45 AM
I've had surgery to remove 24 inches of my stomach intestine, got acid reflux, chronic nasal infections, pnemonia and difficulty breathing. Prior to 9-11 I had none of these problems.

John..What illnesses do you have? Have you been to the Mt Sinai Health Registry?

YES I,VE BEEN TO WTC HEALTH REGISTRY.ALL THEY DO IS TAKE TESTS AND RECORD THE RESULTS IN THEIR FINDINGS. THEY THEN TELL ME TO SEE MY DOCTOR AND DO A FOLLOW UP. AS FAR AS THEY'RE CONCERNED THEY THINK IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH 9-11. ONE HAND DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THE OTHER IS DOING. I'M LUCKY THAT I'M NOT AS SICK AS SOME OF US ARE OR I'D BE UP A CREEK W/O A PADDLE.

Spent 8 months on and off at ground zero. Took several medical exams before 9/11. All exams showed that I was in perfect health. I am now on 7 medications per day and suffer from severe to moderate abdominal pain and nausea daily. Been diagnosed with GERD/ reflux diesase, hiatal hernia, gastritis, had pre cancerous polyups removed from my colon, pockets of diverticuli, post traumatic stress disorder, and a few other ailments I never had before. I also have pre mature beats in my heart, palpitations and an extremely slow heart rate. It seems that this is much more than a coinsidense considering I was in perfect medical health pre 9/11. Anyone else have any of the same medical problems? Please let me know.

I logged in over 800 hrs working directly on the pile and retired in Aug 2002 on a regular pension and in perect health(so I thought).Since my retirement my breathing has become more difficult and I find myself extremely fatigued each day. I've also been recently diagnosed with bladder cancer when symptoms of blood was found in my urine. The Registry site the PBA put up is an outstanding site for comparing other PO's illness and sad at the same time. I have noticed others that have the same symptoms/illness(cancer) as myself. I hope the city and the Department finally acknowledge that ground zero IS the actual cause for so many of us becoming sick.

I'am being seen by a highly respeacted pulmonary specialist for Asthma, Bronchitis associated with the W.T.C he informed me unless you are crawling and spitting up blood you will be denied 3/4 by the city he was told they dont want to open up the flood gates!

I was at ground zero on sept, 11 and spent 5months there. Over the last 3 years i`ve developed chronic sinusitus. I get very bad sinus infections which result in very severe headaches and middle ear infections as well as bronchitus. I also have a constant drip in the back of my throatwhich causes me to have to swallow and clear my throat constantly. Because of this i also have stomach problems because the fluids have no where else to go. In the next 2 weeks i have to have my sinuses operated on, to clean them out and have the passages opened up so the fluids can drain out properly. They also found a polup in my sinus cavity. I have trouble sleeping and acid reflux. All these things i never had before.
Posted by: Michael | August 25, 2006 12:37 AM
in response to mike/ iam being seen by a highly respected pulmonary specialist that the police dept surgeon told me to go to in nov 2001 when i started feeling really sick.
he stated the same thing about the flood gates opening ./plus i will never go in front of those fake doctors /medical board/that repeatly lie and dont listen or acknowledge my doctors findings and think that you are fine. my doctor spoke to them and they still lied on the minutes.i have asthma/acid reflux/gerd/post traumactic stress dizziness/trouble breathing/ denied 4 times cant work full duty /iam on restricted duty like everybody else.
isn't it amazing how all of us have the same symptoms and worse.they cant keep covering up forever.to many of us like this.dont ever go to there doctors.use your own.
Posted by: robert | August 25, 2006 04:55 PM
dont go to mt sinai hosp
dont go to wtc health registry or any other one because according to them you are fine or didnt get these illnesses from the world trade center.this is all imaginary to them.
heroes to a nusiance we became.
Posted by: robert | August 25, 2006 05:04 PM
dont go to nyu hosp.they are all in on this conspiracy that will eventually come out.they can just hide it for a certain amount of time.i would advise everyone to keep going to your own doctor, get a lawyer, and take them to court like iam.
Posted by: robert | August 25, 2006 05:11 PM
they are disaproving everyone from the world trade center /unless you are going to die within the month, they are disaproving everyones line of duty report, does this job actually think after all of this torture they are going to get guys to respond to the next terrorist attack.
i dont think so /i will be with my wife and kids this time.

Retired 01/04 Worked down at the WTC. Is anyone losing their balance. This started about 3-4 weeks ago. At site about 200+hrs
Posted by: Mike | August 29, 2006 08:17 PM
mike/ thats been happening to me since day one and the doctors still cant figure out why iam dizzy and feel like iam always losing my balance/headaches/asthma/gerd/acid relux/rads/post traumactic stress/
my doctors say i have all this and it is directly related to the world trade center /but the medical board says it is not related and i am fine. 4 times denied and counting. isnt it amazing 5 years of doctors appointments/5 years of being sick breathing /but they say iam fine.they will get theres in the end.they arent in my body.they dont know how i feel.
there are too many of us with the same sypmtoms so we cant all be fine.
there are to many of our doctors saying we are sick and the job saying we are fine.

Can anyone recommend a practitioner doing total body CT scans for WTC illness screening. I retired 9/02.
Posted by: Tom | September 2, 2006 06:13 PM
I am the daughter of a retired firefighter originally from Troy NY....
As a part of the family I want to offer my help.
Those who have been adversely affected, all of you and the residents of much of NY and CT need to realize that you should avoid, gasoline, petro products, air freshners, plug ins, cleaning products, perfumes colognes and any other products that trigger your chronic illness. It has been my experience that sweating helps rid the body of the toxins. Increase your fluids distilled water is the best. Helping each other and supporting each other in these dark days is essential. I have prayed for you all and will continue to keep you in my prayers at my daily Mass. If this information helps one of you it was worth the effort.
Always His Servant,
Kathy Fitz

I responded to the WTC on 9-11-01 as a volunteer EMT. Was heavily exposed to the thick air soup all day, and was at one point inundated.
Just had 1/2 my thyroid removed due to nodules diagnosed as suspicious, and am waiting for pathology report. Have had many difficulties with fatigue, asthma, GERD, gastro problems, constant feeling of irritation at back of throat, headaches, odd skin lesions on knees and elbows. I am told, however, that there is no correlation at this time between thyroid problems and WTC exposure.

I just sat and listened to the names of the victims of 9/11. The victims loved ones are still in pain. I've been sick since 6/02 with chest pain, shorthness of breath, RADS, Sinusitis, vocal cord dysfunction, sleep apnea, hypertension,GERD,lung nodules, atelectasis, mediastinal cardiomegaly, and my spirometry tests 65%. I'M FULL DUTY. I TAKE A LOT OF NITRO TO KEEP GOING. The man in Queens I am forced to see they call doctor; said everything is normal holding my test results. I'm sick and tired and was ready to quit taking the 15 or so medications; but today i listened to the names of the victims and I don't want my children reading my name years from now because I die of a heart attack.

I dont understand how they can deny anyone the 3/4s under the world trade center disability law, if the illness falls under one of the qualifying conditions(see the police pension fund order 1-2005)and it sure sounds like everyone here has a qualifying condition

How many of you have developed lung nodules? If so, what is the course of action you are taking? Complaining of shortness of breath, chest pain and now doctors found a nodule in lung.

I WAS AT THE WTC SITE FOR APPROXIMATELY 2 MONTHS LIKE EVERYONE ELSE,I WAS EXPOSED TO CONTAMINATED AIR AND GIVEN FALSE INFORMATION AS TO THE AIR BEING SAFE. NOW, I AS WELL AS OTHERS ARE SICK WITH VARIOUS DISEASES AND ILLNESSES. SARCOIDOSIS IS THE DISEASE THAT HAS AFFECTED ME. HOPEFULLY, THE POWERS THAT BE: FEDERAL,STATE,AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS,REALIZE THAT SARCOIDOSIS CONTRACTED BY MANY RESPONDERS TO THE DISASTER ON 9/11 IS ONE OF THE MANY DISEASES AND ILLNESSES CONTRACTED BY THE PEOPLE WHO RESPONDED THAT DAY,AS WELL AS THE SUBSEQUENT DAYS AND MONTHS AFTER. IT IS RIDICULOUS, THAT THE CITY GOVERNMENT AND OTHERS ARE TRYING TO SAY, THEY DO NOT RECOGNIZE SARCOIDOSIS AS A DISEASE RELATED TO 9/11. THERE ARE TOO MANY OF US WITH THIS DISEASE POLICE OFFICERS,FIREFIGHTERS,EMS,CIVILIANS,ETC. WITH THIS DISEASE THAT WERE AT THE SITE ON THAT DATE AND DAYS AND MONTHS AFTER IT TO DENY US RECOGNITION. SARCOIDOSIS IS A DISEASE DIRECTLY RELATED TO EXPOSURE TO THE WTC DISASTER. SO MANY PEOPLE WITH THE SAME DISEASE JUST SO HAPPENED TO WORK OR BE IN THE SAME AREA AND WERE EXPOSED TO TOXIC AIR. 9/11 CAUSED OUR DISEASE. SARCOIDOSIS IS ONE OF THE MANY DISEASES CAUSED BY THE TOXIC AIR AND CONTIMATED MATERIALS AT GROUND ZERO AND THE RECOGNIZED SURROUNDING AREA.

CONCERNING MEDICAL EXPERTISE FOR 911 ILLNESSES
Please refer this information to related organizations, institutions and victims of the 911 health crisis.
Recently, I listened to several broadcasted medical conferences of doctors and pharmacists speaking on the toxic effects of 911 environmental contaminants inducing severe inflammatory lung conditions. I think these professionals have protocols worth investigating for their merit.
One of the doctors says he was successful in reversing the toxic effects on a fireman's lungs by a special detoxification process. The doctor making the statement name is Dr. Richard Walker and the results should be clinically validated. He did not mention a web site but can be reached at 1.800.631.4837. He detailed a condition-specific protocol for the fireman and will tell you his name if asked. Please call and ask the name of the fireman to give others hope with respiratory conditions related to 911.
Another doctor who spoke on the 911 conditions and should be of major interest is Dr. Alan Pressman of Gramercy Health Associates. He can be reached at 1.212.228.5600. His web site is www.drpressman.com. He mentioned an Organic Acids Analysis is first and foremost and a lung cleansing protocol.
Jerry Hickey of Hickey Chemists is a pharmacist with a dietary biochemistry background and can be reached at 1.800.349.0929. I have had very good and long-term results with Hickey Chemists health products when counseled by his associate Argina Gogna. Hickey Chemist web site is www.invitehealth.com. Argina can be reached at 1.212.744.5944.
Dr. Brian McNamee is a specialist in the rehabilitation of injuries to limbs. He can be reached at 1.516.512.8973.
Please refer or consult these experts for the 911 illnesses. Please contact these professionals with utmost urgency.
Most sincerely,
Johnnie

Where are all the other unions on this issue? Why is no one going public with illnesses being confronted by all police, fire, ems, other law enforcement, National Guard, Trades -- state and federal. Everything is fragmented. While goverment conitunes to cover up, the affected groups are all over the place. Let's come together as one for a change.

My husband has a two page list of symptoms and a LOD that won't heal almost a year later. He couldn't drive a car today and had to take a vacation day to avoid Lefrak. This is the most ridiculous treatment of America's Heroes that I have ever seen in my life. Had any of you been to war and exposed to chemicals in the same manner, you probably would've been treated better. Someone needs to step in here and take control of this situation. Enough of the denial within.
My husband was diagnosed with heavy metals along with RADS. Blood tests and hair analysis prove heavy metals. I would advise others to get the same. Mt. Sinai is denying that it still exists, but FEDERALLY FUNDED...enough said.
The doctor at Lefrak doesn't quite get that people want to be well. This isn't about money, it's about living life.
I have information about the Vitamin D levels for the person who is looking for it.
My husband has 13 plus diagnostic codes and is told, "You're not sick. You're full duty." Unreal. I'm angry. He has difficulty walking, his vision is blurred...he was POISONED.

My hands and arms are losing sensation, I have pain in my neck and throat, I am fatigued and frequently feel nausea, my complexion has gone pastey. Doctor says that nothing is wrong. Help
Posted by: Publius | September 22, 2006 12:04 AM
If your physician can't figure it out, get another doctor and keep plugging away until you find it. I don't know which doctor is telling you nothing is wrong. If it is one working for the city, ignore and keep pressing on..this is about your life. No matter what..this is about YOUR life.
Blood and hair analysis for heavy metals might be a good way to go. Try a homeopathic physician or turn to a detox program to get the toxins out of your body. Even if you can't find out exactly what's wrong, maybe you can feel better. It seems like an expensive option, but there are some places that are free for people who worked at the WTC.
There's a good chance doctors are finding nothing because they're looking for the wrong things. That, or you just have a bad doctor that isn't listening to you.
Blood will show current levels of heavy metals. Hair will show past exposure. A CBC won't show everything that is going on in your body.
You have to find someone willing to take the time with you to look at everything. You were poisoned at the WTC and the dump by toxins. PERIOD. You know where you were exposed and can see the types of illnesses others are coming down with. Take a look at that and piece some things together.
There are good doctors and bad doctors...you have to find the good ones and don't give up.

I was down at WTC right up through April 2002. I was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 04 and had surgery. I found out later I also have liver tumors. I worry about the future. Everyone points to the presumption of disability bill, but they fail to see that tumors are never mentioned! Cancers, lung disease and even skin problems, but not tumors!?
Please tell everyone you know to get checked with an MRI or CT scan.

I Responded on 9/11 when the first and second towers were struck. I was on the site when the first tower came down. I fractured my knee and breathed in alot of the tower debris. I suffer from a constent pain in my joints and muscles. Sinusitius & Ear infections are a monthly thing.
Bronchitis pays a monthly visit. My Balance isn't the same. I can't sleep without a sleep aid. I have these incredible headaches with these sharp pains in my skull.
You explain these things to your co-workers and family members and know they can't understand the pain that your going through. The doctors have no clue. They only say one thing " YOUR FINE, TAKE THESE ANTIBIOTICS! Im Hoping that this registry will work for all of US. GOD BLESS ALL.

MOS taking medicine for GERD should consider whether some of what they are feeling is caused by either Prevacid, Nexium or Protonix. I don't care what they say about a lack of side effects. I was down and out on that stuff. I think it is debillitating notwithstanding the lack of reported side effects in the so-called trials for FDA approvals. Consider how you feel off of it and think about other ways to control the GERD.

I used to work by the WTC and just last year I was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis a lung desease.

I was a first responder on 9/11/01. I spent a total 17 days in surrounding areas. A few years ago I started getting total numbness in my arms and feet. Then the skin on both hands started peeling. I have been diagnosed by my doctor as having chronic rhinitus which means I'm basiccaly allergic to everything now. I was also told that I am just shy of the level for sarcoidosis. Before 9/11/01 I never went sick now I'm a commando. I'm not healthy enough where I should be working but I feel out of options. I'm an active cop I just want to be able to do my job again and support my family.

I also spent 3 months down in the surrounding area of the pile. I was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis and GERD and chronic sinusitis and rhinitis. I continuously have that annoying cough and clearing my throat. Drives me and others crazy. Like all of you, i to have been denied LOD, with no explanation for the denial. I consider this major negligence on the Medical Division. They gave us a WTC-A LOD exposure # . The A stood for airborne i was told. Then we file respiratory LOD papers from airborne elements and they deny us???????? Very sad and discouraging. I guess they are hoping we all die off before they have to be forced to consider us LOD... Just hang in there and pray for the best.

Has anyone received accidental disability under the WTC bill?
Posted by: BM | November 10, 2006 06:59 PM

NO ONE RECEIVED 3/4 OR HALF BECAUSE THE MEDICAL BOARD KEEPS DENYING
OR PLAYING THERE STUPID GAME OF BEING DEFERRED/THOSE 3 DOCTORS ON THE BOARD LIE AND ARE NOT FOLLOWING THE WTC DISABILITY LAW/GOV PATAKI
MY HIGHLY RESPECTED PULMONOLOGIST TOLD ME THAT THEY CANT CONTINUE TO KEEP DOING THIS BECAUSE MORE AND MORE OF US ARE GOING TO GET MORE SICK OR DIE.THEY HAVE TO DO SOMETHING.
THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS TO HEROES.
THATS WHY I WILL BE HOME THE NEXT ATTACK. I MADE A PROMISE TO MY KIDS AND WIFE.

I volunteered for the Red Cross a few weeks after 9/11. Afterwards I developed a chronic pain condition as well as severe respiratory problems. I still suffer from these conditions, no doctor can seem to accurately diagnose my pain disorder although it certainly exists. I didn't know pain could get this bad. I am fighting suicide every day. I have also been dealing with a nasty dry cough since my exposure to the site. I think we all need to get together and file a class action lawsuit against the FDA for saying the air was breathable and OK and now many are dying and getting cancer or worse. We may all be sick and dying but we have to band together. If an attorney is reading this please take these people's claims to heart. They are true, there was a massive coverup about the toxins, and there is still evidence in the area of the toxins that were in the air (look at all the toxic buildings they are now tearing down). I have ruined nearly every relationship with a doctor I have had when I make claims of falling ill from post 9/11 dust. I am written off as crazy. Well you know what, **** those doctors, ****the FDA, and ****the red cross for putting so many people at risk and not taking responsibilty for this. We have to collectively hold these ***holes responsible or nothing will happen on an individual level. CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT! Let's start one now before we are all dead and no longer have a voice!!!

I wasn't at the WTC but I live in NY. I am moved by each and every one of you. I go to a Dr for a work related "sick bldg" syndrome - mold illness that causes many of the symptoms that you describe above. My dr is an environmental specialist that you can see through Mt Sinai in either NYC or Yonkers. He treats many WTC victims and is a terrific dr with a lot of compassion. I encourage you to reach him - Dr Jaime Szienuk at Mt Sinai - Irving J Selikoff Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Telephone in Yonkers is 914-964-4737. May take time to get on his schedule, but believe me, he is well worth it. After seeing a primary care dr for months who had no idea why I was constantly fatigued, couldn't breathe properly, suffering with strange rashes, ear pains, etc - Dr Szeinuk was a tremendous blessing. May you all feel much better, heal, and appreciate all that we do have, despite so many horrific and painful losses. My heart goes out to each and every one of you.

3 to 6 months on or around pile.
6 of us are sick from same unit 3 with lymphoma,3 with severe R.A.D.S.and heart problems and myself with the following: 2-lymphatic tumors 50% breathing capacity,Severe night sweats, tumor on kidney, pluruel thickening (asbestosis),severe GERD,spots on lungs.Just to name a few. All of us worked together during 911. One year to get in front of Articile 2 board. Best advice i can give to anyone that is sick is DO NOT go to Mount Sinai, I. J. Selikoff Center for Occupational & Environmental Medicine Manhattan because of there political connection to the city of New York. Do go to any cell affilated to them outside of New York no political connection there. Doctors will make connection to exposures at outside sites. You need letter from an Occupation Doctor showing nexis.email me anytime for questions.
God bless all

i am a soldier in a military police company out of utica, ny and performed security operations at the wtc / ground zero for a few weeks starting sept. 12th. i was newly diagnosed with asthma in 2005, and acid reflux shortly after 9/11. i recently put in a claim with the veterans affairs and have been denied my claim, which took 11 months. i had no medical problems prior to 9/ll. i have up to a yr. to appeal my claim. does anyone have any advise on va claims and appeals. they say i was not able to prove 9/11 being the cause.

I was a first responder on 9/11 and spent the next month at the site. I have since developed Grade B esophagitis (erosions in my esophagus). I also have chest pain, shortness of breath, chronic respiratory problems and now the esophagitis is causing problems in my throat. Most of my problems can be kept in check with life long meds and my pft's are not bad even though the doctors say I have RADS. Anyone out there with similar conditions?

Well,
Just got my scan results back. Have been suffering with severe Asthma, sinusitis, GERD, and unexplained Chest Pain since 2002. Full Duty. No one seems all that concerned, except I cant walk up a flight of stairs without taking a rest. Walking through secondhand cigarette smoke, eating the wrong foods or swallowing the wrong way will require my inhaler. I have to remind myself that I went to the Doctor for Pneumonia like symptoms on 9/18/01. Many medications, tests and paperwork. No real answers, except take this medication, blah blah blah. Scan says I have Subsegmental Atelectasis. Using the internet for definitions is not encouraging.

Our group has seen many of these diagnoses, GERD, RADS, asthma, lupus, lupus-like symptoms, rheumatoid arthritis, sleep apnea, etc. Most 911 reposnders have the same problems. The problem is getting the City or our agencies to see the causality. For example, you are diagnosed with sleep apnea and your doc does not believe it is WTC connected, no problem. Start to google Sleep apnea and World Trade Center or environmental exposure and see what comes up. I found a medical study that shows a higher incidence of Obstructive Sleep Apnea when hypertensive medication and psychotropics (for depression) are taken either separately or together. So with studies like this, you can educate your own doctors and they will write you a letter of causal connection. You would be surprised to see how many are just like you.
In regards to these diseases being universally accepted as connected, by the city or the state, that must come from the epidemiologists studying this. And we feed them these studies all the time. Here is the linkto the one I just mentioned. http://www.chestjournal.org/cgi/content/full/125/4/1279
For Subsegmental Atelectasis, this is a disease also known to be caused by beryllium or asbestos exposure among other reasons. It is almost always found in older men with asbestosis. What is it? Well, it is usually described as a collapse of the lower part of the lung, that is below a obstructed segmental bronchus. It is sometimes call "plate like" due to its look on an xray. You have air sacs in your lungs that look like grapes that are filled with air. Yours, are not filled, but flat like or described as collapsed.
Our members are diagnosed with sarcoidosis, pulmonary fibrosis, and nodules too... Keep pushing the doctor to find a diagnosis. Get a good pulmonologist. Occupational specialists are even better, if you can find one.
OH..and for MIKE, the MILITARY POLICE OFFICER, contact: https://wtcophep.rti.org/ this site for federal workers to get WTC treatment.Toll-free number: 1-888-702-0630
Hope this helps. M-

I am writing to urge everybody to get a physical. I was healthy and fine until after I retired in January 2005. I moved to North Carolina and noticed that I had shortness of breath and started seeing doctors. I was diagnosed with Asthma, Sleep Apnea, Acid Reflux, GERD, RADS, High Blood Pressure, Type 2 Diabetes, High Chorlestro, Catarac in right eye, early signs of airway obstruction, 5 nodules of different sizes in my lung and god knows what else they're going to find. The doctors and specialists in North Carolina didn't know enough about the effects of WTC 9/11 and could not say my health effects were a result of WTC. They recommended that I move back to the NYC area to get treated by WTC specialist. I would highly recommend for those who plan on moving out of NY, DON'T. I would also recommend if you have health problems, don't retire. Once you retire you're out of luck for trying to get 3/4's. Your health will not improve. Once your lungs are damaged they are non reversable. A doctor advised me to get full physical annually to document everything and get copies for yourself. He mentioned the health effects of the Vietnam Vets with Agent Orange and the Vets with the Gulf War Health Problems. They just don't know enough of the health effects or treatment for our problems. I spend about $200 a month on medicine. Thank God I took a job with the government to make ends meet. My wife is also a retired Detective and has health problems and we have young kids. Keep on top of your health, if not for yourself do it for the kids. Good luck to you all.

I am a 9/11 first responder with 8 yrs on the job. I was in great health on 9/11. I am now 32 yrs old and was diagnosed with Non Hotchkins lymphoma in January of 2007. This does not run in my family and the kind of NHL I have is common is 60 yr old woman ( im a 32 yr old male ) so do the math.
It all started with swollen glands in my neck, groin, underarms and back of the head. I was showing none of the other symptoms.
I went for CT scans, PET scans, lymphnode biopsys and a bone marrow biopsy. I went for 3 oppinions at 3 different hospitals and the best oppinion was at Memorial Sloan Kettering in Manhattan. Hopefully they will knock it out and I can get better again.
Does anyone remember the EPA and the city claiming how the air was fine down there and everything is ok??? Well its not fine and ok. If it was this page wouldnt be full of cancer stories from 9/11 responders.
I wonder if the employees at microsoft are comming down with lymphoma left and right?
All I can advise to all MOS, get yourself checked out by your own DR. Do evey test possible whatever it costs. They knew what we were breathing in for months while we were all standing down there for no reason whatsoever.

Hi...someone I know recently got sick from the wtc dust. It just happened so suddenly. I wish I can help him. But He doesn't even let me see him anymore. I keep worrying. I had sent a letter to the white house. I will keep praying. Good luck to all wtc responders.

I've written a couple of things on here already. When I read about Ian considering suicide, I'm deeply concerned. Please check out this website: www.wtcsick.com
I created the site after being frustrated trying to find good physicians, etc. and out of concern for others who have been struggling. At the time I created the site, not many people were talking about their illnesses. Now, things are changing.
Yes, we should ban together and support each other because these illnesses are taking a toll on not only the people who are ill, but their families as well.
Also, please note that there's a link on my site for the National Birth Defect Registry. Information is now being collected about children born with birth defects to First Responders.
I urge all of you to keep your heads up. Be a fighter and don't let the illnesses beat you. Please feel free to email me at any time. I'm not a psychiatrist, but we're all in the same place with the illnesses, and it really does help to speak to other people who are going through it.

There has been a great number of illnesses, some of them life-threatening, to Police Officers and others that were involved in the rescue and recovery efforts. Instead of rushing to the aid of the stricken officers, the Police brass seems to be involved in an effort to sweep it under the rug.
It is time for all concerned citizens to be aware of this problem that affects thousands of brave people and their families and to contact your local media, your elected representatives and whoever else may help.
They were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to save others, it is now time to come to their aid

This is from a member of ESU who wanted his message to get out to as many people as possible.
I’ve recently been diagnosed with Stage 3 Multiple Myeloma. Multiple Myeloma is a cancer of the Plasma cells found in the bone marrow. It represents 1% of all cancers and accounts for 2% of cancer deaths. The Myeloma cells accumulate in the bone marrow which causes anemia, reduction in the production of white blood cells, and also reduces blood platelet counts. Although certain professions have a higher risk factor, many physicians feel that exposure and inhalation of the contaminants during the collapse of the World Trade Center on September 11th 2001 and the contamination of the environment in the months that followed contributed to my current condition.
In November of 2006, I underwent a full body image that was offered through the Detective Endowment Association. Although the body imaging has been a blessing to those of us who suffer from ailments of the heart and other detectable illnesses, the test is not however able to detect certain other debilitating ailments. In December of 2006 as in previous years, I underwent my yearly OSHA physical offered through the Police Department. The test consisted of an EKG, blood work, pulmonary testing, hearing and a vision test. Although these tests identify many abnormalities, my condition however was not identified.
In late February, early March I began to feel fatigued, I suffered from shortness of breath, and I would wake up several times a night to urinate. I noticed my urine seemed to be very foamy. My only symptoms at the time. In March I saw my family physician and underwent some additional tests which included a urine analysis. The results showed evidence of microscopic blood particles in the urine. On March 23, 2007, my physician prescribed outside blood work assuming I had a possible prostate infection. The test results were shocking, My urea nitrogen level was 43 and my creatinine level was 5.8. My December 2006 OSHA blood work results indicated a urea nitrogen level of 14 and a creatinine level of 0.8, which were all within normal reference ranges. I was informed at that time that I had only 15% total kidney function and that I was at “End Stage” renal failure. After a consultation with a kidney specialist, I was admitted to Staten Island University Hospital for a one day kidney biopsy. That one day biopsy turned into an 11 day emotional nightmare, with an 8 day Intensive Care stay.
During that stay, I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma which was later confirmed through a bone marrow biopsy. I was informed that a byproduct of the Myeloma is a protein that restricts the functions of the kidneys, therefore, causing permanent kidney damage. During those eight days in intensive care I underwent a radical procedure called “Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy”to try and regain some renal function. The Therapy consisted of eight straight days of continuous dialysis with only breaks to receive my Chemotherapy. I was discharged from the hospital on Friday April 6th to spend Easter with my family. The results were not as I had hoped. My creatinine levels have risen again indicating that I am still in Renal failure, with the possibility of receiving Dialysis three days a week, three hours a day from now on in addition to fighting my cancer. I was told that because of my advanced stage 3 diagnosis my only hope of survival is a successful bone marrow transplant. This cancer has blind sided me. I am consulting with a renowned specialist in this type of cancer at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan later this week. Hopefully the Chemotherapy that I’ve been enduring the past two weeks and will continue to receive for the next two or more months will put the cancer in remission and give me the opportunity to receive the bone marrow transplant that I desperately need. My pregnant wife and three young children depend on the success of this procedure.
Before this, I was a completely healthy 37 year old Detective with no prior medical conditions. I implore all of you to consult your own physicians and get this necessary testing. We are not invincible. I am truly touched by the outpour of support and compassion from the New York City Police Department, the Detective Endowment Association, all my fellow members of Law enforcement throughout the country and my friends and family.
Doctors have told me that the most effective way to detect Multiple Myeloma is to measure protein levels in a simple urine analysis unfortunately these levels are not being measured in the standard tests.
