Medicare Advantage Update

As you may be aware, a state Supreme Court judge has issued an order modifying the City’s planned implementation of a Medicare Advantage plan for City retirees. The new implementation plan set forward by the court is as follows:

  • The new effective date of the Medicare Advantage Plan will be April 1, 2022.

  • The Opt-Out period will be through March 31, 2022.

    • Premiums will not be charged for GHI-Senior Care from January 1, 2022 through March 31, 2022 when the initial opt-out period ends.

  • Retirees who do not opt out by March 31, 2022 will be placed into the Medicare Advantage Plus Plan effective April 1, 2022.

    • Retirees placed into the Medicare Advantage Plus Plan will have an extended opt-out period which will run through June 30, 2022. During this period, retirees may elect to leave the Medicare Advantage Plus Plan and return to their previous plan.

  • Retirees will be subject to only one set of deductibles for calendar year 2022.

  • Retirees should receive a letter containing a list of the corrections and additions made to the previously sent Enrollment Guide on or before January 7, 2022.

    • The letter will contain information on how a retiree can obtain a corrected Enrollment Guide free of charge, and the specific web addresses where the corrected Enrollment Plan may be seen.

  • The City will provide periodic updates to the Court regarding how many providers have been contacted about the plan in specific geographic areas.
