PRESS RELEASE

PBA President Patrick J. Lynch reacts to Mayor Bloomberg's statement that there will be no Police layoffs next year

Pat Lynch said:

“While we think the mayor made the right decision by ruling out police layoffs next year, that doesn’t mean we won’t be losing more police officers over the next several months through budget cutbacks and attrition. The city is already down 6,000 police officers from its peak years and there’s talk that we’ll be losing at least 2,000 more. We just can’t afford to lose police presence on the streets, especially in tough economic times. Safety is the economic engine that powers this city, bringing in tourist and tax revenues. The state budget shouldn’t shortchange the city. To keep that economic engine running, we need more police officers – not fewer.”
